HOW'S THIS FOR A USE? The UW-Madison Future Truck Team built a diesel-electric hybrid 2002 Ford Explorer for the 2003 Future Truck Challenge. The hybrid design included two 273.6 V Panasonic Prismatic battery packs which will be wired in a parallel configuration. Because these packs contain high voltage, it is imperative that they be monitored at all times. A High Voltage Interface (HVI) has been designed to monitor the voltage, current, and isolation of the packs at all times. The monitoring of these items at all times is necessary in order to ensure that the vehicle is safe and operational at all times. The High Voltage Interface box houses a Bender Ground Fault Detector. The Bender Ground Fault Detector is a safeguard to ensure the isolation of the battery packs and vehicle ground (the truck frame). The Bender Ground Fault Detector monitors the resistance between the plus and minus terminals of the high voltage battery packs and vehicle ground (the truck frame). Ideally, this resistance should be as close to infinity as possible to ensure that the packs are isolated, virtually eliminating the chance of an electrical shock. However, if this resistance should become too low for some reason, the Bender will detect the problem. Once a ground fault is detected, the Bender Ground Fault can be used to do a number of things. If a ground fault is detected the competition rules state that all teams must have an easy access visual alarm(there are LED indicators provided on the Bender unit). Wisconsin went one step further and installed an audible alarm in the vehicle cabin. However, The Bender Ground Fault can be set up to trip a relay if a problem occurs in the high voltage circuit.
