The TURBO2 Blending Volumetric Karl Fischer Titrator represents an innovative approach to the analysis of solid and viscous samples which are difficult to analyse by traditional methods.
By replacing the conventional magnetic stirrer with a high speed blender revolving at 7500 rpm, the TURBO2 reduces solid materials to a fine particle size in a very short time. This action takes place inside a specially designed titration vessel that enhances the blending motion. Similarly, when using the medium blend speed of 3000 rpm, viscous materials are also effectively blended with the solvent(s).
The problems associated with determining moisture in solid materials are easily overcome by the TURBO2 s blending action, which quickly and efficiently extracts the sample moisture directly into the solvent mixture. This technique eliminates the problem of moisture loss or gain associated with standard sample preparation procedures.
Since the Karl Fischer technique is a chemical reaction specific to water, it produces results for both surface and bound moisture. In contrast, the method of determining moisture by loss on weight can give varying results since it is calculated using total volatiles evaporated from the sample.
Using the TURBO2 for these types of sample can dramatically improve the accuracy as well as the precision of the analysis.
High accuracy and precision is obtained by the exact titrant delivery system combined with an internal calibration procedure. An accurate gravimetric or volumetric calibration of the entire system provides the user with the required documentation for compliance with the ISO-9000 or other regulatory bodies.
To accommodate such a wide range of materials, a large access port in the vessel top plate permits the introduction of samples up to 28mm (1-1/8 ) diameter. In addition, the end-point detection electrode is built into the vessel side wall, giving it complete protection from the movement of solids during blending. With the large 750 mL reaction vessel, the TURBO2 can accommodate a wide variety of sample sizes as well as a large number of analysis before the solvent(s) must be replaced.
The sturdy construction of the titration unit permits operation equally well in both quality control laboratories and production plant environments. Electronic monitors and safety interlocks ensure that the user is protected from unsafe instrument operation.
When analysing a sample with unknown characteristics, simply select the SEARCH mode and the TURBO2 will continuously blend and titrate the sample until the moisture is totally extracted. The result is then calculated and printed showing the optimum blending time for that particular sample. This convenient procedure enables the correct blend time to be established before programming it into one of the methods in memory.
Because of the high speed of analysis, the time from weighing the sample to obtaining the final moisture content is typically only a few minutes. Simply drop the sample into the reaction vessel, press YES on the keyboard and then see the result on the display and printer.
Sample preparation has been a great source of error in accurate moisture determination in pharmaceutical products. Moisture is typically lost or gained during the sample preparation. With the TURBO2, simply weigh and introduce a few tablets, gelcaps or caplets into the vessel and press YES to start the analysis. TURBO2 will blend the sample, extract and analyse the moisture in the same vessel and report the results in your unit of choice. A printout containing all the necessary information for FDA compliance will be generated after the analysis.
